Google's new mapping features include personalised discovery tools and easier group planning.

Explore

A series of smart updates and new features in Google maps are now rolling out worldwide and available to users.

Explore

The new Explore tab will give you:

  • Quick tips for restaurants, bars and cafes in your chosen area
  • Details of events and activities in your area
  • Trending lists to track down top spots based on local experts and Google’s algorithm

You can also keep track of your foodie progress as Explore will show you which spots you’ve already eaten at and which are left to try in a particular area or category.

Your match

Using machine learning, Your match gives a numerical score for how likely you are to enjoy a particular place. It’s worked out using the information Google has about the place, plus the food and drink preferences you’ve selected in Google maps, whether you’ve been to a place and whether you’ve rated it or added it to the list. Google says the scores evolve over times as the system learns and your preferences change.

Group planning

This feature makes planning something with a group of friends easier to coordinate.  Make a shortlist of possible places, and your friends and family can add more and vote on them.

For you

Follow neighbourhoods and dining places you’d like to try and the For you tab will keep you updated with the latest news and ideas for new spots to try.

Augmented Reality walking directions

Back in May when Google first revealed the updates, they also demonstrated a new Augmented Reality driven directions feature to help users navigate and find locations on foot.

Just hold your phone up and Google will overlay directions onto your camera view, making it really easy to find your way.

Google Maps AR

Google hasn’t announced yet when this feature will be available.
